A Beautiful Occasion

August 2025 Member of the Month

A Beautiful Occasion is a small, local team of passionate, highly qualified, and experienced florists and event stylists, working solely within the Port Stephens region. Our days are filled with creating and designing beautiful flowers for all occasions and events. We love nothing more than planning the perfect flowers for a wedding or special event, and we cherish the uniqueness of each one.

We, Amy Mahony and Sara Gambrill began A Beautiful Occasion over 13 years ago in Port Stephens, sparked by coffee, probably champagne, and a mutual love of Home Beautiful Magazine, styling, flowers, and weddings. The business has grown and adapted over the years, even through challenges like COVID.

We started very organically, collecting styling props and storing them in our garages at home (which our husbands just had to tolerate\!). Now, we are housed in a large industrial premises on George Road. A Beautiful Occasion is not only the region’s top wedding and event florist and styling business but also the creator of beautiful everyday flowers, which we deliver across Port Stephens or are available for purchase from our beautiful shop. We also host workshops to share our knowledge and passion for flowers and continue building our community connection.

We are strong supporters of building local partnerships, supporting the local community, and empowering local people. Port Stephens is our home; we were raised here and continue to live, work, and raise our own families here.

What do you love about being a part of the business community in Port Stephens?

We love the genuine sense of connection and support that comes with being part of our business community. We enjoy collaborating with local businesses and appreciate how we cheer each other on and truly want to see more local businesses succeed. The natural beauty of our area inspires our creativity, and the friendly and relaxed lifestyle makes running a business here feel personal and rewarding. We are proud to be part of the Port Stephens business community.

What are your 3 best features and benefits?

1. Our flowers are more than just fresh and beautiful bunches. They are messages of love, joy, celebration, support, sympathy, friendship, compassion, and often “just because.” Our flowers often say so much more than words. We honestly pour our heart and soul into every arrangement.

2. We take the stress out of planning wedding flowers and styling, bringing a couple’s vision to life for their special day. Wedding planning is a mammoth task, and the majority of our couples have never planned a wedding. 80% are having a destination wedding here and therefore don’t live locally, often busy with work and life. Our knowledge, skills, and systems make the lead-up to the day stress-free and everything they ever dreamed of! You could say we are the fairy godmothers for weddings

3. The space we have created on George Road is frequently described as having “a vibe.” It’s a place to gather, catch up over coffee and eat something yummy from Satra, sit in the gardens and enjoy a moment, browse through the shop, find unique gifts, homewares, fresh flowers, candles, and chocolates, and be away from the hustle and bustle. It’s becoming the worst-kept secret location for locals and visitors

Why did you join Business Port Stephens?
